Sea Art!?

Post by Maurice » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:47 pm

What a surprise, esp for My daughter, Katie, on her first trip in a sea kayak. We bumped into this chap off Sligo harbour two weeks ago during Karl`s wiska meet, does anyone know of other such Victorian follies along our coast or harbours? The Metal Man on Perch Rock, in the uniform of a Royal Navy Petty Officer, points to the deep water channel leading to Sligo Harbour. Four were originally cast in 1819. A \'brother\' is on a headland near Tramore, Co.Waterford. This one was erected on Perch Rock in 1821. He\'s 12 feet high and weighs 7 tons. It was originally planned to go on the site of the nearby Black Rock lighthouse but was changed because Perch Rock wrecked so many ships. Black Rock didn\'t get it\'s light until 1835.
The Metal Man forms a leading light along with that on Oyster Island, leading ships to the channel between Oyster and Rosses Point. The light was added in 1908 and was powered by acetylene until 1979 when it was converted to propane. The character is a white flash every four seconds.
