I would never have thought a few years ago that paddling would involve spokeshaves and low angle half block planes - in fact I didn\'t even know what they were and now I\'m an expert. I even copped on quicker than a certain Dublin solicitor which way up a clamp goes, but looking at his paddle I\'m not too surprised at that. I never thought I would enjoy myself up to my tonsils in sawdust, getting blisters from planing and callouses from sanding. There is nothing to beat rolling in the icy cold Connemara waters with a paddle you have made yourself. For such an amazing experience I would like to thank lots and lots of people - but in particular Pete, Martin, Máire and Josie, Gerry and Fred for the lump of foam to sleep on in the van. Go on ya good thing!!!!

Photos to follow when I figure out how to set them up!

I too was at the paddle making weekend and I did enjoy it overall, despite certain issues :
* When I got there I was determined to make a paddle for myself but they said I wasn’t up to it and I had to fight my corner before I was allowed not to just watch,
* I wanted to start “marking up” my timbers on Friday night and not socialise, but that wasn’t allowed,
* On Saturday morning there was no one to help anyone get started,
* There was then no one to advise generally and encourage progress, you were given a three page article and that was that,
* Specifically I was made go cycling in the afternoon for a couple of hours, and it was awful, I met at least 3 cars on the road, all of whom were going the other way, and the scenery, well ,say no more,
* I wanted to work well into the Saturday evening but the general attitude instead was in favour of drinking,
* Some of the songs and presentations Saturday evening were intemperate,
* On Sunday morning I wanted to start early but was encouraged to stay in bed,
* The only reason I made it to the end was that I refused all assistance and advice from Pete and Martin in general and Josie in particular, and
* I wasn’t given any relief against the exorbitant charge notwithstanding I was the star student and gave no trouble to the organisers.
Just setting the record straight

PS The major question raised by the weekend is how does Josie stay slim with a mot so good a cook and so excellent a hostess.
PPS If further evidence is needed, here is a picture of Josie helping someone else, after refusing me.

This was a great weekend and I have to repeat a big thank you to Moira (apologies if the spelling is wrong) and Josie for marvellous hospitality and accomodation. Without you both this could not have happened.
Thanks to the people who participated from the experts to the beginners. Apologies again, to those who could not be allocated a place.
There were 11 paddles produced to the finished product right up to oiling and most tried out in the local Bay. Mine was the only disaster.
The success of this weekend is due to the generosity of all taking part, the ability of all to muck in and help out, the willingness to share expertise and more importantly, precious tools. People who had not met before, quickly got acquainted and worked together.
Egos and \"precious\" (if they existed)were left somewhere else and the sense of humour took over and the crack was mighty and we had some magnificent music from very talented musicians.
We also had some awful performances so I promise not to drink Lucozade again.
