Hi, as a relative blow-in to Sea kayaking myself (took it up less than a year ago) My advice from recent experience is that your best course of action is to take some proper instruction from those who know.
Wet sessions / rescue sessions with Deepblueseakaying were invaluable to me along with the experience and technique coaching provided.
Solo paddling is something I do quite a bit of...ON THE LAKES..in Blessington, the only place you\'ll get blown to there is the far shore and your kayak isnt going anywhere.
Did leave my brain cells at home on st Stevens Day off of Arklow, thinking, I\'ll be grand, I can handle the conditions....without going into details, I consider myself very very lucky to be here typing this after the experience I had there.
So, take a course or two with someone get a feel for it. Paddle loads of different Kayaks before you buy and enjoy. :)
