Keel Strip for Glass Kayak

Post by brianmacmahon » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:50 pm

Hi all,

Looking for some advice. I\'ve recently acquired my first glass kayak which I am now breaking in. However before I break it in too much I figure I should install a Keel strip in order to reduce the wear and tear and to facilitate my dreadful beach and rock landings.

I was thinking a kevlar strip would be best, where would I acquire the materials and what is involved in installing it to a glass hull. I would assume that getting the adhesive right would be the priority. But what do I know........NOTHING.....so please enlighten me those that know their glass.

Thanking ye in advance.

Mac ;)

Hi Brian,
I got an Explorer about 3-4 years ago. At that time I intended getting a keel strip (everyone had one). I cant remember who I talked to at the time but they suggested seeing how I got on with it before putting one on as it does add weight. There is no problem adding it over scrapes and scratches.

What I have found is that most of my scrapes are not where the strip would be but to the side. They are easy to fill with gel coat.
My suggestion would be to wait and see if you really need one. You could save yourself some Time, Money and Weight.

You can compare boat with and without strips in Ballyconelly this weekend if you are going.

Conor.
