Opinion on Torr Head Tidal Scheme

Post by Mary » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:50 pm

ISKA are listed as a \'Scoping Non Statutory Consulteees\' in the consultaion process regarding the potential development of a marine current tidal energy project off the north east coast of Northern Ireland.

The Environmental Scoping Report for this scheme has been sent to me. The proposal is to place 100 underwater turbines in the tidal resource off Torr Head. The design of the turbines is not finalised but possible designs are included in report.

THETIS Energy Ltd are seeking our opinion. If any ISKA member would like to include an opinion or response to this document in the associations reply, please email to the address below or post here. The committee will then compile any concerns on the members behalf.

The document can be downloaded in pdf format from
www.ThetisEnergy.com
I will also bring the report to the symposium if anyone would like a read.

Speak of the devil! I\'m pretty involved with this project and would be happy to answer any queries directly - unfortunately I won\'t be at the Symposium this weekend (shock horror!) so will avoid the interrogation

However, if you want evidence of the danger posed by a tidal turbine to a Sea Kayak, look here:

Wasn\'t me, honest.

In case that came out wrong, I actually meant the non-danger but that assumes you can roll I suppose. But then if you can\'t roll you shouldn\'t be paddling into very turbulent water anyway, perhaps.

There are various tidal energy technologies - not all will have a surface-piercing pile that creates a wake such as Seagen.

For those who don\'t know already, I\'m all for tidal energy extraction - we\'re working intensely on the Seagen project to establish the environmental impact of the turbine. Assuming it\'s acceptably benign, and all indications so far are positive, then the next step is to evaluate the impact of farms of these things.

The Torr Head project is a long way from implementation, only intial site investigations are underway. Unlike the nucleur industry, effluent disposal etc, the emerging marine renewables industry is subject to some of the harshest environmental bureacracy and onerous obligation imaginable. It\'s a long way from being a goer for Torr Head.

Step down now son.....
