Results & Pics for Galway Bay Sea Kayak Race

Post by seaweedbath » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:49 pm

Sincere Thank you\'s to all 55 paddlers who turned up for the Inaugural Galway Bay Sea Kayak race. As an inaugural event organised at the 11th hour, the numbers are very encouraging, and we hope 2010 will be bigger entry still.

The race was held in the afternoon of last Sunday 24th May, a day which started with the great excitement of the arrival of the Volvo Ocean Race Fleet into Galway Docks during the early hours of Sunday morning.

The race was split into 3 categories (Novice/Standard & Racers Classes) to encourage particpation across a wide range of paddling abilities over different distances.

As it turned out, conditions on the day were decidedly challenging with a stiff SSW Force 5, choppy 1-2 ft waves, and swirling river currents rising standing waves at Galway dock mouth. Special thanks to Paul Murphy in his kayak and the fleet of Rescue boats provided by Tribesman Rowing club, Kayakmór, & GMIT Castlebar.

Congratulations to the winners of each Class and all paddlers who paddled beyond their skins to complete the laps. The downwind leg from Mutton Island back to Galway docks was for many a crash course in kayak surfing.

Fastest boat on the course was Dermot Hudson from SLCC in the racing singles class, paddling a SIPRE Marlin Ocean Racing Ski, his scorching winning time of 53:01mins for 3 laps some 55 seconds ahead of National WWR Champion; Kevin Pierce from WWKC.

Without the great help from sponsors/volunteers the race would not have taken place.
so Thank you Sponsors - Bord Failte, Kayakmór, Mc Cambridges, ICU, River Deep Mountain High, Xposure & Galway Maritime.

How lucky to have such a wonderful Logisitics/ crew!......... Louise/Anna/Ursula/Monica/Koti/Sarah/Lara/Rakkel/Ray/Paul/Timmy/Esther/Johhny/ Sarah/ Meaghan/ Megan/ Geo/ Lohan Snr\'s/ and thanks to Chris Tierney for excellent photos.

A race website will be commissioned shortly at www. galwaybayseakayak.com

For now, photos from Galway Bay Sea Kayak Race can be viewed at

Results for the race are attached.

Hope to see you in 2010.

All the best

To Jim & all the racers
well done - looked like a fun event.

Racing - did raise a comment at the ISKA Symposium.
As a Committee - there isn\'t a competitive bone in our body.
but as we can see these races are getting popular and bringing new people
into the sport as well from other Kayaking disciplines.

Is it time we had another look at Sea Kayak / Ocean Ski type competitive racing I wonder... and try to promote this type of event some more.

It\'s not everybody\'s cup of tea for sure - but there are obviously a growing number out there with at least an interest in taking part.

Especially to Jim plus support and entrants well done to a very enjoyable afternoon and yes please to more of these throughout the year.

I enter two or three such races each year, purely for the fun of it and would encourage as many ISKA and other paddling clubs to put their names forward and give it a go.

There is obviously a competitive element however, I find for the most part the majority of entrants are out for the enjoyment of the event, a challenge with a good workout thrown in and the hope of posting a reasonable time.

The various events that I am aware of are outlined below and have different categories, opening it up to everyone from novice and through to K1 race class.

Try one and I can guarantee you will go back for more!!

- June bank holiday weekend - Ocean to City, Cork Harbour
- September - Tribes Kayak Race, Galway
- December - Great Island Kayak Race, Cork Harbour

If you are aware of any others, you might post these on the site.

To the racers amongst you.

Would there be a need / demand for a sepaerate schedule of racing events to be published on the ISKA website -
ie.
Seperated from Ad Hoc / General Meets
and detailed info and contacts etc etc.

At least then we could facilitate the general advertising of such events.

I\'m thinking along the lines of an additional Bulletin board type posting.

(The webmaster won\'t be impressed with me I know - but there you go !)

Why not, especially if it gets more people on the water.

Where events are held near populated areas, it creates additional interest.

It\'s no problem to do, at all.

But it does mean that there\'s yet another forum that needs to be checked out.

I will of course set up an extra area on the BB if people want one.

Well done to all involved in organising the Sea Race in Galway and congrats to all the participants.

Have a look at
http://www.jniea.org
and
http://www.jniea.org/EN/index.php?dest=2009

The Interceltic Watersports festival has seakayak races annually. The event is hosted by a different celtic nation each year with Ireland hosting it in Ballyshannon in 2002. This year it is in Portugal but it must be due back in Ireland soon.. if anyone were intereseted in inviting it here I can give you contact details!!! It caters for all the watersports including other canoe disciplines.

A few ISKA members have participated in Brittany, Wales and Ireland and some took home a few medals too. There was no problem with joebloggs entering on the Irish team, so some of you may be interested.
