Is there a 'porpoise' to your paddle?

Following on from Sara\'s reference to IWDG (Irish Whale and Dolphin Group), the National Parks and Wildlife Service have been surveying porpoises in our coastal waters -including Dublin Bay. They are particularily interested in sightings south of this along the east coast- Bray, Greystones, Wicklow. Sightings can be reported on-line at iwdg.ie

IWDG Casual Sightings Scheme
This scheme enables people who spot a cetacean, or cetaceans, to report their sighting to IWDG where it is logged onto a national database. This helps us discover the number of cetacean species in Irish waters, their distribution and density.

If you see cetaceans on a regular basis and would like to record these sightings, then you can obtain a sightings record form (which are easy to fill out) from the IWDG by e-mailing us or report it on our online sightings report form (be sure to leave a contact telephone number or address).

I say dolphins (5 or 6) from Bray head last week. Definitely not porpoises - we\'re talking a substantial dorsal (say 10 inches), not that \'wheel with a bit of a triangle stuck to it\' look that porpoises have.

v. cool.

Hi Ciaran,

Better to contact IWDG directly for confirmation of what you saw. They are interested in sightings of any cetaceans in Irish waters. See contact details below.

Hi All,

For all East Coast members, I\'m in touch with the IWDG to organize a talk at one of our social evenings.

Provisional plan is for sometime in March but we\'re currently working out the details.

The emphasis will be on wildlife on the East Coast and will cover how we can help the IWDG out with sightings.

I\'ll post details when everything has been confirmed.

Cheers,
Sarah.
