treasna na d. occassionally was quarterly but usually arrives when material has been pressed from members. It is a difficult and time consuming job and if i and other members cannot get articles etc in on time it is little wonder it does not work like clockwork. the magazine is every members responsibility so \"if you are only puttin in a nickel dont ask for a dollar song\"

\"Treasna na dTonnta should be published on the Web\" is my idea.
It refers to archiving TnadT, for future research purposes.
It is not a suggestion to alter the way TnadT is currently produced.
Does anyone know can it be done in some simple way like a scanned PDF, but so that, and this is the all essential point , can the contents be searched electronically?
For example, if an article on a trip to Kerry mentions Bolus Head, will a search for \"Bolus Head\" pick it out of whatever TnadT the article appeared in?
I have a feeling that archiving is a thing that can get away from us unless we keep onm top of it.

Re:OPEN FORUM - TREASNA na dTONNTA.
The searchability of the archived PDF files is an interesting question and the answer is \"it depends\" on the question!
If you meant :
Can I search using standard WWW search engines like Google?
Answer : Yes, IFF the files are [ul]publicly accessible[/ul] then Google picks them up some day and adds them to its massive search index enabling phrase searching of our archives, for free!! Bear in mind the content of the article writers will be open to the entire world, friends and enemies included. This searching of our archives used to be possible. At this moment the archived docs seem to be no longer accessible even though they are listed here:
http://www.irishseakayakingassociation. ... &Itemid=35
As a result they have been removed over time from Googles indexes.
on the other hand if you meant:
Can I limit my searching within ONLY our archived documents using a search facility internal to our web site ?
Answer: \"probably\". But it will require the setup of some free search engine software on our web site. Think of it as a smaller simpler version of Google capability. More than likely many offerings of such software exist. Ciaran \"admin\" Clissmann may know of something appropriate which will coexist with the current web site. It may already even have some text search support which we are not yet using. For example the forum messages can be searched.
This is not unrelated to Alans suggestion on a library of trip logs. The value of being able to search all of this material cannot be overstated. I think it should be available to a global audience. For example before touring the Shannon one year I benefited hugely from information I read in testimonies published by paddlers on English canoe club web sites. These I discovered by using Google and being careful with my search phrases. It encourages visitors.
I am willing to give a dig out if needed.

Goes without saying!
Re:OPEN FORUM - TREASNA na dTONNTA.
Perhaps a stupid question.
But why can\'t said PDFs be placed on a resticted area of the website that requires ISKA username + password long in.
As regards searching the newsletter, just open it up in Adobe and search it.
Yes, admittedly you would have to search each newsletter individually but it all depends on how it\'s arranged. Do you just put a link to the newsletter up? Or do you include the list of articles along with the newsletter link? So you only search the newsletters which had trip reports on Kerry....
BTW, I think it\'s a great idea to have the newsletters available on the web to members.

Re:OPEN FORUM - TREASNA na dTONNTA.
Trip and expedition logs on the website would be great. Especially a dedicated section to Ireland. Future trips could be submitted by e-mail. This would make it easier to transpose to the web. (No re-typing required).
It would require some time though on someone\'s part. Perhaps that person would rather be out on the water than in front of a computer.
New Idea. How about a new \"Forum Subdirectory\": ie \"expedition logs\" to which people could submit their own data including pictures (well compressed). This would spread the workload and ensure variety of trip length and location as well as style.
I run some websites and they need dedication if they are not to go stale. The forum is a great way to keep things fresh and interesting and to keep people coming back. The ISKA BB is great. Etienne
