Skinboats on Post-Cards from the 1900\'s

Post by CarlFarmer » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:48 pm

For anyone interested in traditional Kakas, I came across a set of reproduction postcards from the 1900\'s of Skinboats and Historic Photos... There are loads more showing different aspects of Inuit life...

The last image has \"Two Coracle men. From a postcard, ca. 1900\" stamped on it...

But, sure, can\'t ya see the family resemblance??
Me granny is the good-lookin\' one on the right. She was famous for that beard, you know!!

The coracle picture is probably from the boyne area. they used square as well as round coracles. the square one was probably easier to handle, wih its straight front, since they weren\'t paddled from the sides, but sculled forward (in a kneeling position) with a sculling-draw stroke, using the single-blade paddles. and the net was trailed/trawled between two coracles for salmon (and possibly for rope gymnastics of an evening!?!).

the mix of influences in the kayaks (qajaqs) and paddles is interesting (if yer inta that sorta thing!). alaska, bering sea, aleutian, siberian and boyne valley!
the 3-seat baidarka (top picture) was excellent for hunting, with 2 paddlers and one harpooner/archer. Wouldn\'t fancy being in the front with a hung-over harpooner in the middle seat! the guy in the middle in the photo seems to be clipping his nails or playing video games or something!

Carl, any chance of a downloadable copy or info on where to get them? Pretty please? Beautiful please???
John

No John, either he is reading Oilean or maybe looking at photos of your auld granny with the beard.
