VHF Training

Post by marese » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:48 pm

Is anybody out there interested in doing a VHF training course. I am interested and will organise it if I can get names of anyone else interested. For obvious reasons I will try to organise it for the Dublin area for after Christmas. Trisha.

Hi Trisha,
I\'d be interested assuming the timing works out. Would be interested too to know what I need to know and might learn on such a course.

Before anyone uses a VHF, which is regarded as a mobile radio station, you require a mobile radio operators licence. You then have to register your boat with the Dept. of commications for a mobile radio station.

When you complete the course there is an exam. Once you pass the exam you can then register your boat. From this year the cost to register your boat is about €30 which is a lifetime registration. Previously you had to apply for the licence yearly.

The course teaches you the proper call procedures. It covers the legalities of using a radio etc.

This is only an overview and I,m sure there is a lot I\'m leaving out.

The regs are different in UK including Norn Iron. The operator is licensed to use the equipment, and that equipment must only be used by the operator or under his/her direct supervision. This allows you to transfer your transmitter from craft to craft without having to reregister the details of the craft, or indeed register the craft at all. The license for short range VHF operator is usually issued by RYA for pleasure use and is valid for life.

However, you are supposed to register the radio and obtain a Transportable Marine Radio License, this license also covers a Personal Locator Beacon if used. Such a license is obtained from the Radiocommunications Agency at the DTI.Post edited by: derek, at: 2006/12/13 00:47

Martin Darcy can run a course in Bray on Weekend the 17th 18th Feb 2007. Course fee €180. This includes exam fee, course notes etc. Max 12 students.
The exam is normally run on a weekday. Please let Patricia know if you are definitely interested. Ring or text Patricia on 0872025810. Maybe a good idea to send her a cheque to secure place.
