Re:East Coast Meet 28 June
Hi again,
this evening\'s paddle will go ahead as outlined below.
Weather, as of this morning is
Wind : Variable force 3 or less. Gradually increasing during the day to become South or Southeast force 4 or 5.
so it might be breezy.
If the sun is shining we might land for a few minutes on Dalkey, so bring a bar of chocolate (and one for yourself too).

Re:East Coast Meet 28 June
Well, last night turned out to be quite an epic. Four people in the water at once, in a chunky sea off the SE tip of Dalkey, boats and people separated, some unexpected capsizes, at least one worried leader, some great rescues.
Well done to all who took part - it was pretty educational for me and I hope it was for other people.
Thanks to
Dave Carraher, who rescued indefatigably and paddled two boats at once
Tricia Carraher, who cheerfully put up with kayaking without a boat
Tricia Byrne, who kept hold of her
Evelyn, who trusted her husband....
The others in Tricia\'s group, who rafted up to let Tricia C get out of the sea
Maureen, who did a great rescue in ugly conditions
Sarah, who came through smiling
John Dunne, who endured multiple swims and executed some great rolls
Mark Hughes, who did a great shepherding job, had at tow rope, and used it.
Des K, who patrolled the rough water in search of any lost boys or girls
Some thoughts
- a couple more tow ropes would have been useful. Whether a waist or a deck tow, they really are worth having and carrying
- if you\'re towing a person (as opposed to a boat), get him on the front of your boat, with his heels on the deck. I had a fierce time towing with the person in the sea behind me; Tricia B did much better with the person in friont of her
- radios were pretty useful. If you have one, bring it with you. If it\'s broken, get it fixed. If you don\'t have one, but plan to paddle regularly, they\'re worth getting.

Re:East Coast Meet 28 June
Just saw your not Ciaran. I don\'t know how you count, but I noticed 5 people in the water at the same time. Well done to everyone involved in the rescues especially the people who required rescue. The people in the water were well aware of how rescues are carried out and make the rescuerers job a lot easier.
Well done to all the rescuers who competently and quickly got people back in their boats. I totally agree that a few more tow ropes would have made things a little easier. Also I agree that once people are going on a club trip \"even when conditions are calm as they were when we started out last wednesday\" they should have a paddle leash.
It really does help if people hold onto their boats (not getting at anyone). It was great to see that everyone was happy with the way the situation was handled.
PS my black and blue wife is talking to me again and we had a great paddle around Lambay on Saturday.
