Inishbofin meet June 24th-25th

Post by emullan » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:47 pm

Here\'s some early info about the Inisbofin meet at the end of the month.

The meet will be based at the Inishbofin Island Hostel
700 metres from new pier on the road to the East village. It has dorms, smaller rooms, camping out the back, all mod-cons and no curfew. Tel (095) 45855 to reserve a bed.

Given that this is a inhabited island I think it\'s better that ISKA members support local business rather than \'wild camp\'.

Go to www.inishbofin.com to find other accomodation and info about it\'s heritige, environment and walks around the island.

Meet at the hostel at 1030 on Sat June 24th to exchange info and decide trip plans. NB: There will be no \'led\' trips. Come equiped with tide/currents/weather/map (no. 37), safety equiptment and spares. I have a chart for the area.

Use the BB to arrange to paddle out with others on the Friday eve. it\'s about 11k - a bit over 5 naut. miles - which, at 3 knots paddling speed, will take you about 1 & 3/4hrs. You\'ll be slower if it\'s rough, windy or your arms are knackered!! Dept Cleggan at the beach (GR 612582), at the pier (GR 602585), or possibly at Sellerna beach (GR 585586), though I\'ve no idea what this is like. Please park sensitively wherever you go from.

If you don\'t feel like paddling you can put your boat on the ferry; times and costs are below.

Dept Cleggan
All week 1130, 1400
Mon, Wed, Thu, Sat, Sun 1845
Tues, Fri 1930

Dept Bofin
Mon, Wed, Thu, Sun 0900
All week 1300, 1700

Cost = €15 return (€10 single). kayaks = €10 return. The ferry co. said that they’ll make every effort to accommodate them (Phone: 095 45819 or 095 45894 or e-mail nikolaj@indigo.ie if you wish).

I\'ll be away in France from Thurs 9th to Sun 18th, so e-mail or txt/call (087 7851475) with any queries, questions, problems, or difficulties, before or after these dates.

....oh, and keep up the prayers to the weather God! B)

Regards,
Elaine

Excellent launch point for Bofin is Rossadilsk strand, SW of Cleggan. 45 minutes to paddle across in perfect conditions last August. Parking for half a dozen cars, sandy beach. Do not block access to the beach, used by RNLI at times.

Ciaran [just back from Alaska, unlikely to get to Bofin as a result]

Are there any firm arrangements to meet for paddling over together?

Hi all,

Due to a family emergency that\'s just happened myself and Ian won\'t make it to InisBoffin this w/e. I\'m really disappointed. Hope we can go another time soon.
It\'s not worth us coming tomorrow b/c it\'s such a long drive from here (Waterford!).
I\'ll text all those who left mobile no\'s.
Have a nice w/e.

E :(

Thanks for the organising Elain and sorry you missed a great weekend. The 7 of us that made it out really enjoyed the weekend. I wouldnt mind returning back there again.
The hostel was ok. A bit of a walk when carry all the gear but the hot showers were nice. After the pub, the walk was a doddle. Sunshine was excelent and Margaret swears she saw a dolphin right in front of her but some of thought it was just the hot sun...

Hi, Michael,

Lovely photos; it looks gorgeous; I\'m jealous!
Ian and I are going to head over there around the August b/h w/e. Maybe we\'ll try wild camping by the fort instead of using the hostel!
Which beach did you put in from in the end - Cleggan beach, Cleggan pier or Rossadilsk?
Did you do a full circum-nav, or a circum-nav of Inishark?

Weather was kind but the location was brilliant.
Camping by the fort is a long way away from civilisation in the from of a shop (limited opening hours) and the pub with its superior opening times.
I believe the fort itself is on an island (open to correction).

We did a full circumnav of Inisbofin on Sat.
We visited the south side of Inishark on Sunday.

Wind frm NE picked up to F4+ on our return trip to Sellerina beach (1 M W of Creggan). Lovely beach with more than enough of parking for our select group :-)
