New boat advice

Post by ocallaghan » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:47 pm

Need some advice in deciding on a new kayak; R and M Capella versus Avocet. Would prefer a plastic version, and use it for fitness and paddling in rough water/ rock gardens. Unfortunately i havent paddled either. Does anyone who has one have any positive or negative opinions?

Thanks

I used avocet for a number of years and have just sold it. great boat and nimble but small for large paddler or large load if touring.Just bought aquanaut which is superior in rough water and for touring but still v nimble. don\'t know the other boat.

also worth spending extra on new or cosmetic second - the boats hold their vlaue if you look after them. I presume you\'re talking to Des Keaney.

Avocet is a lovely boat. Also, there are several around, so people are familiar with them and they are likely to hold value well for resale.

I have abused mine consistently for several years on rocks and it takes it all very well. I\'ve also managed to pack a week\'s worth of food and camping gear into to, as well as plenty of weekends away.

I don\'t know the capella, but have a notion (or is that a prejudice) that it might be shorter and wider, neither of which is a plus.

I\'d second Pat\'s comment on new plastics - they hold their value pretty well and Des often has cosmetic seconds and what not.
