Redhead,

Am looking for a VHF. Where did you get your M31 (Prefer to buy from a shop rather than the internet)

Got mine in Matthews centre in cork. Got it for 200 which seemed a decent price at the time. Only place in cork that had that particular model

Thanks for the fast reply.

Did you do a VHF course? Any use (apart from legalities)?
Cant find any on in Cork in the near future so will probably just read the manual carefully.

Have asked around and it looks like the Standard Horizon HX270S gets the collective thumbs up. (hope so as I`ve just ordered one). Look up www.roguewavemarine.com. Maurice.

The Marine VHF course teaches you standard international radio protocols for routine and emergency use. Without those you are in danger of screwing up your own or someone else\'s rescue. Good value for less than a hundred euro.

BIM run courses. Approach them to find out the contact details for the instructor in your area.

Recently got an XM 2000 from Union Chandlers in Cork €135 - seems robust enough, but NOT waterproof (you can get a w/proof case separately). Scottish Paddler Supplies (Mike Thomson www.kayak.co.uk) does a Silva Silva S12 which is waterproof (short immersion at surface) for £100 (€150). He can be a bit slow in shipping orders, but otherwise I\'ve had good service of them.

Martin Darcy of Bray Sailing Club runs courses on a regular basis in their club house. I organised a few VHF courses with him before and at that time he was willing to travel to venues down the country also.... if there\'s enough people. He is worth giving a call. Text me if you want a contact number.
