But we have been asking CI for many years to meet us somewhere in the middle, but all we get are empty promises.
We have had very senior sea kayak instructors and other paddlers with years of experience on various CI committees over the years. And while they have managed to update the syllabus, there has been no movement on many of ISKA's wishes that have been addressed on these forums.
If we use the prescribed ratios as a simple example, 8 to 1 on flat water dropping to 4 to 1 as conditions deteriorate, that was originally prescribed for Instructor ratios in a training situation initially set out for river paddling. Out of laziness, it has been copy and pasted to casual sea kayaking, with little acknowledgement it is a different sport. And our paddles are not Instructor meets, we do not operate as instructors on any ISKA meets. It would be very easy for CI to ask for our input, run this by their insurers and to correct this for our needs. But no, that is too simple.
And Sue, are you not currently on the Board of CI? You have a seat at the table, you are already on the inside, surely if ever there was a position of influence we could not ask for better? But yet still more is being asked,in the hope, “maybe” this time?
What I am beginning to wonder now, is it a case that if ISKA affiliate and they get our fees, only then might CI listen? Our fee to them is very small, I think it highly unlikely.
Perhaps we need to wake up and realise, CI is not for turning....
EGM motions and documents
Re: EGM motions and documents
I disagree Chris and Conor. As I have said before in an earlier post. Times are different, personnel are different. CI Are listening and know that change is needed. The need for insurance protection for committee, and meets officers and trip leaders is the fundamental issue here. ISKA will still be the great group of people on the water it has always been.
Anyway. Let's just get put and paddle. It's a lovely weekend on the way.

Folks, losing her login, the following message was emailed to me as it is, copied and pasted for Emma Glanville:
Hello ISKA members.
I have been reading all of the posts on this thread over the past week, trying to come to a full understanding of the issues.
I have also talked to many ISKA members from East, West, North and South of the country.
This is an important vote and should not be taken without reading all the above posts with a critical and a quizical eye and forming your own opinion. I am not one for being told how to vote, believing we must all make up our own minds.
I have had many discussions and arguments over the years with Fiona and she would say herself that we often disagree on topics. However, having read her post further above, I am inclined to agree with her vision of ISKA and the points she very clearly makes.
I personally believe that the constitution being put forward for voting on is not a finished article and in true Irish referendum style, I think it should go back into the mix to be presented to us again at some point in the future.
The discussions above bring up questions which have been put to CI and have not been answered to a point of clarity. There are many issues which effect the running of ISKA and the running of meets, with no clear and difinitive answers from them.
Because of this, I am inclined to vote against both the proposals. Not as a smite against the committee, as they have put a huge amount of time and thought into this. I am being asked to vote on something which could have a massive impact on the association. There are a lot of unanswered or un-clarified questions attached to it. I really think CI, as the governing body, need to provide us with solid answers to questions which they and ISKA can stand over. We need them to verify this is exactly how it should be and what it means.
Please read the different opinions and make up your own mind.
