First Aid course
First Aid course
Paul Butcher has proposed running a first aid course this winter. It’s aimed at trip/expedition leaders and course providers. It would be two weekends and would give people the following:
• REC 3 revalidation
• Occupation at Work First Aid
• River Safety Rescue
If people have never done a REC course before, Paul could organise two evenings before the course to get them up to speed.
We want to run the course as soon as possible. Please register you interest here or email Des@DeepBlueSeaKayaking.com before midnight on Saturday 11th Feb.
Format
The format will depend on what suits those interested.
Option 1 – two weekends
Weekend 1 REC3
Fri evening start at 1800
Sat – all day to 2000
Sunday – all day to 1700 including REC 3 assessment and Occupation at Work First Aid Assessment
Weekend 2
Fri night – recap session on previous weekend.
Sat 1000-1600 Scenarios on Dalkey Island
Sunday 1000-1600 River Safety Rescue1 Laragh, covering
• use of throw bags,
• defensive swimming
• safety around rivers
• knots
While this isn’t specifically for sea kayakers, it is very useful for anyone who paddles on the fresh stuff and is also applicable for those who go rockhopping!
Extra topics
The following will be covered in addition to the standard topics:
• Blood pressures
• Sam splints
• Fish hooks/jelly fish stings/bites
• Relocating shoulders
• Airway management
• Nutrition on trips
• Wound management – irrigation, assessment, closing
• Medication for expeditions – mixtures of pain relief, anafelitic shock, antibiotics
• Long term management of patients
Option 2 – a 4 day weekend.
Start Thursday night and finish on Monday.
Option 3 – a 3 day weekend
Cut out the River Safety and Rescue
Numbers
A maximum of 12 can be taken.
Cost
The cost depends on numbers and which option we go for. Paul is doing this for a third of his normal rate so it should work out relatively cheaply.
Again, please register your interest and preferences before Saturday 11th Feb as we’ll be making the decision on options on Sunday.

Re:First Aid course
I\'m intersted, but I\'ve done a course on river rescue before, so I\'d be happy to leave that part out.

Des, I\'m interested in updating my REC. Would prefer the 3 day weekend option leaving out the river rescue section.

Re:First Aid course
Hi Des,
I\'m definitley interested - option 1. But whether I can actually attend or not depends on the dates and whether or not I can bum accomodation in Dublin.
Happy to do river stuff.
I don\'t have REC 3. All my (mountaineering/water safety) first aid qualifications are at least 10 yr old at this stage. I can\'t take days off work, can\'t do \'evenings\' for obvious reasons, but am free Fri afternoons, and from April 10th to 23rd.
Cheerio,
Elaine.
