For Ciaran Carthy : Inland Touring

People

I\'m thinking of doing some fairly big distances on some or all of the
Erne, Shannon, Grand Canal, and Barrow waterways. Using a Fibre Glass
Romany Explorer.A few questions:
1. Is it slower to paddle on Fresh water than salt water ?
2. Which is less effort: going North to South or South to North taking
wind and current into account. Taking place July/August.
3. What is a good Lock strategy. I know the Shannon and Shannon Erne
locks can be travelled through (physically) The Barrow and Grand canal
locks are not always manned however. Phoning inan option. Bringing a
Lock key is a bit cumbersome and portaging may be difficult due to the
drop from the bank to the water. Also is there a by law that kayaks are
not allowed (with paddlers on board) INTO locks? ie that towing the boat
into the lock is OK but not paddling through.

Thanks for any advice
