Question Tidal predictions.

Post by Maurice » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:46 pm

Question:
Looking at Admiralty predictions for Dublin region, moments ago (setting my watch), I found a fairly even oscelation between high and low tides on a 7 day chart. As you might expect.....
Out of curiosity I reqiested a prediction for Cairns Australia and found that every second high / low tide is very much reduced on the previous high / low. Have a look at the tides link for yourself.
Why so?
Whats happening on that side of planet \"E\" that aint here?
Maurice.

I\'m guessing it has something to do with the Great Barrier Reef, which runs all along the NorthEast Coast of Australia.

My money is on Cairn\'s latitude...

Brief description from http://www.biosbcc.net/ocean/marinesci/ ... vement.htm

\"An equatorial view of Earth relative to Moon will serve to further explain the lunar tides. Although most areas on Earth experience two high and two low tides, their heights are \"mixed\" because of the declination of Earth relative to Moon. From this equatorial view you can see that as Earth rotates each latitude on Earth would, most likely, not be in an area of the high tide bulge under Moon that was equal to the bulge on the opposite side of Earth. For this reason the tidal cycle is generally referred to as semi-diurnal mixed tides —or, twice daily mixed tides. The highest of the high tides is called the \"high high tide\" and the lower high tide is the \"low high tide\". The lowest of the low tides is called the \"low low tide\" and the higher of the low tides is called the \"high low tide.\"

Just a guess though... Cara

Isn\'t the generosity of some people amazing?

Take for example Teagasc\'s (Cara\'s employers) willingness to pay for the education of irish paddlers by supplying Cara with internet access...

Well done Teagasc!

H2Obaby is right. However 99% of paddlers don\'t know why there are two tides a day in the first place ! Answer, see the diagram. It is because there is a bulge on the side of Earth facing the moon and the side facing away. Easy to understand why gravity would put a bulge under the moon, but why does gravity put a second bulge on the other side of Earth as well?
The challenge is to explain that. Without mentioning E=mc2.
Your turn H2Obaby.

Happy to further enlighten you on the ways of the world, Maurice!

The answer to your gnawing nipple question can be found at
