Post by Fred » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:46 pm

I took the picture from a 20 meters cliff with zoom. The beast looked quite big and empressive. Is it common thing in Ireland? Any idea of the tipe of shark is might be?

How big do sun fish get? The face appeared from the ocen and disapeared after 30 seconds... From the distance, it looked like it could be more than 2 meters....

Yep, Deffo a Sunfish. I believe Ricky Fulton `n` Co. sighted one off the Aran Islands on that meet.
I saw a documentary once on Tim Severns (?) Brendan Vouyage where one of the crew caught one but they could`nt eat it, they did however, render it into fish oil (almost all of it, yuk!). Their bodies are soft jelly like with very little meat, if you know what I mean, very like the lumpsucker adult that we found washed up at Bullock Harbour, not so long ago.
The huge specimen that is on display in our Natural History Museum was \"caught\" in a rock pool at the back of Lambay Island at low tide!!!! (Many moon`s ago).
Maurice.

Browsing today in the Apprentice Boys Museum in Derry, as one does, I saw a map of the siege of Derry depicting the scene and the events as they unfolded. Top left was a lithograph of a sun fish, and a very good likeness at that, with the caption saying that it was caught in the Foyle just before the gates were shut as part of a food gathering exercise. The date was 1689. So I guess it isn\'t global warming bringing them up here.
