This is just a preliminary posting on this the first of the ISKA meets

I will be researching over ther weekend the trip possibilites
which are pretty good from thi area weather permitting.
we will run a Level 3 trip each day 10-12 miles
and a Level 4 peer paddle.

however just a heads up on the accomodation.

We are not pre-arranging anything for you
the Killary Hostel is booked out already
so it has to be individual booking of B&B accomodation.
There are no official campsites in the area - excepting Streamstown perhaps.

If any enthusiastic paddlers already got some B&B names etc - please post on the BB.

I will make a further posting next week to confirm the meeting point
etc

Thanks
Alan

Hi Y\'all,
Having recently moved to Galway, I was quite interested in the Killary Harbour meet. Only problem is that I\'ve no sea kayak....(smallish problem) I am in the market for a new one but havent got any particular type in mind. I\'ve done a bit before with Hynser in Kinsale and also down in Union Hall. Is there anywhere that would let me try out a kayak or 2 in Killary over the weekend to help me decide what type to buy?
Cheers,
Ciaran

B& B Accommodation

Killary House has rooms - 500m from Leenane.

095 42254 - I think they have about 5 rooms left.

there\'s always the tent.....
The campsite at Culfin might be open and it\'s right on the water

It might be worth while calling in to River Deep Mountain High in Galway, if you are in the market for a boat Pat may have a demo that you could try, they certainly have a decent selection of boats for sale.

Is anyone planning to camp and if so is there a consensus on the best/most convenient site? I\'ve found no web presence for camping at Streamstown or Culfin, but there are sites by beaches near Renvyle and Gowlaun, if they\'re open.

Does anyone know whether either of these might be a good and/or popular choice?

Would be helpful to know approximately where the likely pub and trip meeting points are likely to be. Can anyone shed any light on these?

Pub is likely to be in Leenane, at the head of Killary Harbour. Hamiltons or Gaynors.

Launch points depend to a large degree on the weather.

At the moment we\'re thinking the beach at Glasillaun, just S of Little Killary, as the launch for short/easy trips up the Harbour, and for a more challenging trip N along the Mayo Coast.

Another possible launch (and bear in mind, these are very outline and non-binding!!) is the beach directly opposite Sraidbhaile and Crump islands, just outside Tully village (not Tully Cross!).

There are pubs in Letterfrack as an alternative to Leenane, but they aren\'t near any of the accommodation, so aren\'t a good bet, really.

My personal opinion vis-a-vis camping is that March is a dodgy month to plan to camp, and that a hostel might be a better idea. But that is, of course, a matter of personal preference.

Culfin and Gowlaun are one and the same. Not open until May 1 according to website. You will find no web presence for the Streamstown but you can take it that it\'s open - Chris is happy to take anyone\'s money at any time......

will not be able to make it but Glasilaun beach outside tullycross is perfect camping location. Dive centre is next door and if nice or small sum might allow use of showers etc. Also good b&b at beach with free use of kitchen for evening meals.
