Greetings from Pacific Grove California (next to Monterey).
My Lady and I are planning a trip to your part of the world in June and would like to do some kayaking while there. I guess we’d be considered “intermediate” paddlers. We’ve accumulated a goodly number of hours on the water, but then Monterey bay is pretty much a big lake most of the time. Any suggestions for trips that are likely to be protected from the weather would be appreciated.

Download (or better still, buy) the guidebook, Oileain by Dave Walsh. See www.oileain.org. That gives you the lowdown on the whole coast.

Good/great areas are a personal choice; I\'d say that Roaring Water Bay in Cork, south Connemara and NW Donegal (around Burtonport) are all great areas with a fair amount of shelter. All these areas are Atlantic, and so get the big rolling swells, but in gentle weather these don\'t break; they just pass under you (but you\'ll know the idea, it\'s not unlike Pacific swells, after all!).

Also take a look at our meets section and this Bulletin Board before you come, you may find that there\'s paddles on that you can join, if you want to.

Incidentally, you\'ll need kayaks (unless you know something we don\'t!). There\'s only a few suppliers, so you may need to plan your trip around this. See our links section for pointers.
