Clew bay and Achill Sound

Hello All,
We are heading up to Clew bay for a couple of days starting tomorrow.
If weather permits we would love to kayak up Achill sound. Can you give us any pointers on what to watch out for in the area and the best time to try it? If the weather is too bad we were thinking of trying a portage at Malranny (is this reasonable)!
Also, any other suggestions that are worth visiting in the area would be greatly appreciated.
