Can you explain if it is envisaged that the 2 courses mentioned
Essential Navigation & Advanced Navigation
would become a pre-requisite to have been completed ahead of
the present Sea skills Awards L3/4/5 ?

Hi Alan,

Yes, the Essential Coastal Navigation is tied into the Level 4 Skills Award and the Advanced Navigation to Level 5 Skills Award in the same way the river and open canoe awards are linked to the River Safety and Rescue (RSR) courses. Essentially there should be nothing new training wise (or very little) within the awards than is already being taught but across the schemes it was noted by a number of providers and participants that more time was being spent on navigation/safety than on actual paddling skills training. Separating the aspects out into skills training and nav training should focus our training more and lead to more efficient use of time. If it suits the course being run the skills and nav can still be run as one programme - that\'s up to the individual instructor.

Yes that is all clear - and indeed makes perfect sense.

However having checked the syllabus for L4 / L5 Sea Skills
on the Canoeing Ireland website - these fail to mention that
the Navigation Courses are now a pre-requisite.

So leading to my question above.....
Therefore an update to the current syllabus is needed.

We have a full review of the skill awards completed and will be putting it to the membership to pass off at the TDU AGM on Feb 16th (4pm at sport HQ in Dublin). This new skills award directory will have the necessary changes to incorporate the nav awards as pre requisites.
