Rona, Skye, Bothy

For anyone else who may find themselves on Skye....
Rona is a rocky and pretty island off the N.tip of Raasay, itself the largest of Skye\'s offshore islands. Raasay lies off the E. coast of Skye, which means it is somewhat sheltered from the prevailing SW winds. This makes it a good bad-weather option. Raasay is itself about 25 or 30 Km long, allowing a two-day circumnavigation.
Anyway, back to Rona. We got there after spinning up the E. coast of Raasay, and after I had forgotten where the bothy is on the N tip of Raasay. We were pretty pleased to find Rona Bothy, a super-de-luxe bothy on the water\'s edge, with rare luxuries (for a bothy) of a shed for hanging gear, gas cookers, wood burning stove with firewood, electric lights and soft bunkbeds. Access to showers and proper toilets, plus internet weather forecasts are also on tap. Rona Bothy is run by the island manager for Rona (Rona belongs to one of the Scottish Estates). The bothy costs STG10 per night, or STG40 for the whole place.
You could easily stay a couple of days at the Bothy (we stayed 2 nights), paddling, walking, fishing and so on. If you run out, wine and whiskey (oh, and food) can be acquired from Bill, who also offers B&B and houses to rent on a week-by-week basis.
For a midge-free, high-comfort and pretty cheap option, in a lovely location, I\'d recommend Rona Bothy, if you\'re on Skye.
[Not a for sale notice. Not associated in any way with Rona Bothy. Just a good spot to know of].
