While tempted to smile, it does underline an important point - people in general have no idea what a sea kayak can do, where it can go, and how long it might go for. So telling someone on the shore is a very good idea. As is putting in a trip report with the Coast Guard.

Ciaran, I assume you are referring to the people on shore, and not the people in the actual kayaks ! Although then again..............
More seriously, dive groups always assign a \"shore marshall\" in case of non-returns. Usually one of the divers \"significant other\", who would be along for the day, but not diving. So we need non-paddling hubbies, wifeys or partners coming along and waiting patiently on shore for us. I think informing the Coast Guard is a much more reasonable, mature and considered option!
