Planning to get an Oceankayak or other type sit on top kayak for some costal paddling (unfortunately no sea kayaking clubs in cork). Any advice? Are there any other kayaks that I should consider?

Sit on tops appeal because of stability, safety and my size( I\'m 6\'4\'\')

Thanks

John

Am also interested in getting into sea-kayaking. Have done level 2 ICU. Ocean kayaks appeal because am comming from sculling (rowing) and not used/not liking being enclosed.

Are sit on top kayaks suitable for sea kayaking? What is the best type? Mostly interested in long distance costal paddling and some surf

Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Adrian

Hi Adrian ,
Jim Kennedy here from Atlantic Sea Kayaking.
I rowed for 12 years myself. So I can understand your dilemma .
It will be strange to see where you are going.
I would say no to sit ons for sea kayaking . They are a play thing as far as I am concerned. They are so easy to use one can get into a bad situation and then find they are not suitable for getting out of it. You are also very open to the wind. As I say they are great fun . but they certainly have limitations.
Spend a little time getting used to an enclosed kayak and you will not be dissapointed.
Good luck.
