I can see Conor\'s point here, but it was at the end of the day he himself fired the shot into his foot! Google Earth ! What do they know ?
I admit though that I didn\'t know of Colt Island until the Sunday of the weekend of Josie Gibbons\' surprise 60th birthday party on Mason Island in 2009, so anyone looking at an Oileáin prior to that date, for instance, won\'t see it even there. You have to be up to date. Its been on the www.oileain.org for a couple of years now so no excuse. Wilhelm was castigated as a lúdramán for researching an old Oileáin before this so Conor, you were warned.
I can well understand that anyone looking at OSI might, might, might overlook Colt as the spot where this shot was taken, as it doesn\'t look much on a map. Many such wee yokies hard in by the shore (or by a larger better known island) aren\'t much, but some are. I have sometimes (as often or more so not, I admit) been blown away by such places or a feature of such places. Ardnacross Island off Mason was \"discovered\" the same day as Colt, and is a very beautiful spot in a conventional way.
But Colt has a fantastic feature, a lagoon, deep enough to swim in and even dive into. Fed by fresh water at HW, nevertheless kayaks can\'t get in at any stage, so the water must surely heat up on a sunny day. Not only that but at one place where the water is deepest the rocks at the side are scraped by ancient ice and designed by God for sunbathing. In that way Colt Island is like the famous Pollock Holes in Kilkee in Clare, only remote, so you\'ll have the place to yourself, always.
Highly recommended (unlike e.g. Croaghnakeela, the \"real\" island Conor likes!). Our game of sea kayaking is a very varied activity. Some won\'t go out if its calm, others if its rough. Some like dolphins, others caves. Some like distance, others to fish. For some people why you\'d want to force a landing on for instance the Muglins needs no explanation, while for others no explanation is possible. Me, I\'m a serial island chaser, obsessive, I admit it, and because my mind is wide open I occasionally get very pleasantly surprised by the Colt Islands of our lovely little country and I admit I amn\'t one bit sorry.
Knotman, look what you are causing. Save us all from me.
