Post by martinguilfoyle » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:48 pm

Is there anyone out there who is willing to loosely organise a surf training day or weekend. I would be interested in learning a bit and we might have a few other interested parties. OF SURF i know nnnawting.

I\'ll be taking my surf boat to Inchydonny in Clonakilty Co Cork over the xmas and new year period. I will definitely be going out on 27 Dec. if there is a wave running i\'ll be surfing, if no wave then I was thinking of doing the Round Great Island Kayak Race.

In the mean time between now and the end of the year, if a good swell hits the South coast and I\'m not working/babysitting/fixing the house/xmas shopping (yes its started already)/or doing anything else, I will call out for interest in a trip to this area.
These are all sandy beach breaks and so would be suitable for beginners to mess around on and they are all reasonably close together on the south cork coast line.

Barley Cove (W facing)
Ownahincha (SW facing)
Long Strand ( SW facing)
Inchydonny (S facing)
Garretstown (S facing)

No instruction promised, no responsibility taken.

Folks,

I think a more formal two-day surf event would maximise value per mile driven. I did a couple of days in Donegal (Bundoran) a while back, and even though we got lousy surf, we learnt some very useful skills.

I think an OEC-based, professionally-instructed weekend, using surf boats or sea kayaks, would be better than anything too ad-hoc. Additional input, expertise and tips from those of the ISKA who can spell serf would of course be great!

my 2 cents

Symposium Surfing

Post by Susanna » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:48 pm

Dedicated surf session will be held on the Sunday morning of the symposium....11th November.

Surf coaches on the water will include Nigel Dennis, Robin Ruddock, Oisin Hallisey, Keith Fitzsimons, Rob Coffey.....and probably more in the hope of having a good instructor to paddler ratio. Helmets will be compulsory for the instructor-led sessions, so don\'t say I didn\'t warn yiz.

Highly recommed it for anyone wishing to have a go at surfing and am hoping to have surf boats for those interested in having a go in them.

And as good a place as any to get a group formed for formal surf training

Hi Susanna

Muster Dive and Canoe have a demo plastic Mega Neutron surf boat. Its one of the latest models. It is a bit of a handful compared to a sea kayak. Once on the wave however it comes to life.

If you wish, I could ask to borrow it again and with their permission I could bring it up to the symposium for people to try out, perhaps this is an option if you fail to secure a ready supply of other surf boats.

The photo below is of Jonny Bingham of NI who is the current World Kayak Surf Champion. He is paddling a Neutron. Wouldn\'t it be cool if we could persuade him to come and give us a demo or a workshop - its just down the road for him.

kind regards

Mike
