Advanced trip for Saturday 18/05/2024
There will be a full-day trip tomorrow for strong intermediate (L3 minimum, with experience of long trips) and advanced paddlers, around Mizen Head. The minimum distance is 30km, more if we explore all the nooks and crannies along the way.
We need to be on the water by 09:00 latest (for the tide), so we need to meet up (about a 15 minute drive away from Schull) at 08:00 to set up the shuttle, so obviously we can't wait for the briefing at the OEC at 10:00.
The first part of the trip will be on a lee shore, so will be a bit lumpy. When we arrive at Mizen Head, the southbound stream will already have started, so we can expect some dynamic water, but we will be travelling with wind and tide, with a swell on the starboard quarter, so it should be fun.
To that point, this is a very committed paddle, with very few options to land until after we round Mizen Head. After the headland there are numerous places to land and stop for lunch (and maybe even a bit of surfing) e.g. Barleycove, Galley Cove, Crookhaven).
This trip has it all; caves, arches, small islands, tide races and surf beaches, beautiful villages, ancient monuments etc. (What else is there?). It promises to be a cracker, for the right group.
If you fancy this trip, and think you are up for it, please contact Tash or Dave Elwood or Pa Conway this evening.
