Paddle Floats

Post by DaveWalsh » Mon May 06, 2019 10:54 am

I met a sea kayaker recently with a brand new paddle float, in his rear hatch (longevity, apparently ......), and a discussion followed. Mine has never been used in anger that I can recall, practice sessions only (and years ago at that) but just in case, it has always lived behind my seat, tethered with elastic cord. 15 years it has been there in this kayak and it wasn't new when first it was tied into place. 1992 or 1993 for a trip to the Lofotens is my best guess. It looks very much the worse for wear (not unreasonably) so I took it out and gave it its annual NCT, which involves sitting on it and jiggling up and down a bit. It looks awful, its as stiff as a board, but it passed the test flying. I was about to put it back because this is the time of year I "regularly" get notions about paddling "this summer" when I thought that maybe a little retail therapy might be a good idea. This yoke is PALM but I wonder is there an industry standard out there these days someone might kindly direct me to?

Dave: Reminds me of a Mermaid's Purse. A big one. Purse that is, not mermaid :o . Those things float forever. No worries so. Sennen
