REC 3 First Aid Course, September 2017

Post by Gavan Sheridan » Fri Aug 04, 2017 4:39 pm

Hi Folks,
East Coast Sea Kayaking Club is organising a Remote Emergency Care Level 3 (REC ) 3 day course on September 2,3 & 16, 2017. Included in the syllabus are many of the medical emergencies that may be encountered in the sea kayaking environment. It also covers the use of AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators). The REC 3 is a very useful qualification to have as sea kayaker, no matter what your experience. There are no pre-requisites for this course, it’s open to all and the certification is valid for three years.

The course will be conducted by Paul Cahill. Paul is an Advanced Paramedic and Firefighter - who also happens to be a sea kayaker (!). The course is approved by Canoeing Ireland, BCU, Cycling Ireland, Mountain Training UK, RYA and others.

We need 12 persons to make the course viable. The fee is €150 per person based on 12 people attending (normal cost pp is €225).

The course will be run over three days of intensive training in the Dublin area.

If you’re interested, please email me at gavansheridan@gmail.com. I’d like to try to get feedback asap.

Thanks.

PS: The Remote Emergency Care Level 3 (REC ) course is recommended for candidates going forward for Canoeing Ireland’s Level 4 Sea Kayak Skills and BCU’s 3 Star Sea Kayak awards. It is a pre-requisite for BCU’s 4 Star Sea Kayak Leader award.

Paul tells me that he can see about putting on a REC 4 course if the demand is there. The REC 4 is run over 24 hours (two x 12 hour days). This course builds on previous levels and is more suited to expeditioning in remote places and looks at the use of some specialised medical equipment and the administering of some medicines. In order to attend a level 4 course, participants are required to have completed a Remote Emergency Care level 2 course (or equivalent) within the last two years. The same cost structure would apply to a REC 4 course (if there is sufficient demand).

So, have a think and mail me if you wish to reserve a place on the REC 3 course. Likewise, if you are eligible and would be interested in a REC 4 course let me know.

Note: the REC 3 dates are set, REC 4 is dependent upon demand, then the dates will depend upon Paul's availability.

Hi Folks,
REC 3 cancelled due to low numbers. REC 4 taking place before February 2018. As we already have 9 definite participants this will be going ahead. If you are interested and eligible for the REC 4 course, as per original message above, let me know,
