Remote Emergency Care 3 (REC)

Post by leonconway » Mon Oct 10, 2016 10:06 pm

Hi all.

ECSKC will shortly be organising a Remote Emergency Care Level 3 (REC ) course. Included in the syllabus are many of the medical emergencies that may be encountered in the sea kayaking environment. It also covers the use of AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators). The REC 3 is a very useful qualification to have as sea kayaker, no matter what your experience. There are no pre-requisites for this course, it’s open to all and the certification is valid for three years.

The course will be conducted by Paul Cahill. Paul is an Advanced Paramedic and Firefighter - who also happens to be a sea kayaker (!). The course is approved by Canoeing Ireland, BCU, Cycling Ireland, Mountain Training UK, RYA and others. More detail on Paul and his colleagues here: ... ul-cahill/
& here: ... ul-cahill/

We need 12 persons to make the course viable. The fee is €150 per person based on 12 people attending (normal cost pp is €220).

The course will be run over three days of intensive training. The location will be Wicklow / Dublin. We’ve yet to tie down dates as I’m hoping to give people a chance to pick three from a menu of dates. As of now, we’re looking to tie down two out of the following five dates: Sat Oct 22nd, Sun Oct 23rd, Sun Oct 30th, Sat Nov 12th, Sun Nov 13th.

If you’re interested, please post here or text / call Leon on 086-4124430. I’d like to try to get feedback asap.

PS: The Remote Emergency Care Level 3 (REC ) course is recommended for candidates going forward for Canoeing Ireland’s Level 4 Sea Kayak Skills and BCU’s 3 Star Sea Kayak awards. It is a pre-requisite for BCU’s 4 Star Sea Kayak Leader award.
