Fishing and foraging

Post by patriciacarraher » Tue Jul 14, 2015 9:45 am

A huge thanks to Peter Hennesen, Dave Glasgow and Patricia Byrne for a fascinating and weekend full of activity despite the weather.
We started Saturday morning with a seaweed exhibit in the bell tent and learned how to identity , dry and cook all types of seaweed. We moulded lead weights for our fishing lines, we smoked fish, lit fires using flint and steel, walked the seashore collecting channel wrack, sea spaghetti, sea lettuce, laver, rock samphire, carrigeen, had our fingers tickled by snake anemones We ate limpets, wrinkles, chocolate pudding made from Carrageen, carrot and sea spaghetti salad, haddock sushi, mackerel sushi, smoked haddock, smoked mackerel, fried mackerel and haddock, fried sea lettuce and fried gutweed and, my favourite, barbecued mackerel stuffed with lemon and dill and other goodies.

Sunday the winds died down so we get out for a paddle .It was a great weekend full of all aspects of marine life which surround us on our paddling trips. We'll never go hungry.

Thanks again to all who turned up and to all who gave so generously of their time to make it such a magical weekend.
