High Tides in Venice

Apparently Venice is experiencing unprecedented high tides this last few days causing immense damage in a spot where high water is a regular occurrence, so there must be something very unusual going down. First research stop was the tide tables for Galway, which maxed at 5.0 a few days ago, on say W...

Re: True and Magnetic North to align after 360 years.

Knotman, I am absolutely blown away by this ZERO variation thing as of 2019. I always knew at some level that it was a moveable feast but .............. All my active life as a navigator, on hills at first and later at sea, 10 degrees west was a given. There were many formulas / mnemonics used to re...

Oileáin news ......

Word reaches Oileáin of a kayaker in Mayo performing a commendable civic duty. Names have been withheld to protect the guilty - https://www.mayo.ie/news/major-clean-up-completed-at-dun-na-mbo-cliffs/ Latest change to Oileáin involves a small islet off Renvyle in Connemara, renamed, or more named (of...

Re: Rock on Rockall, you'll never fall ........

Fiona Brexit is of course a fascinating topic that would be both interesting and amusing in equal parts if it wasn’t so ominous for us here in Ireland, and we didn’t even get to vote for or against it. In the Rockall context, the UK argument is that the 12nm exclusive zone does apply around even lif...

Re: Project Oileain

Oileáin a Dó is officially out of print. For a particular reason, I tried to buy a gansey load, but they weren't available. I got a couple of dozen so as at least to keep the last few in Ireland. The first edition 3,000 sold out in about a half dozen or so years. Oileáin a Dó 2,000 have sold out in...

Rock on Rockall, you'll never fall ........

Rockall is in the news again, and because I do remember researching the thorny legal issues some years ago for Oileáin 2014, I dutifully resorted to reading it (!) to see what it had to say on the subject. I was immediately reminded that Kevin O’Callaghan (a.k.a. GEO), first President of the Irish S...

Coastal Erosion

In the context of researching Wexford Harbour in connection with Ireland's most interesting sandbank - Rosslare Fort Island - I became aware that the island had formed by the erosion of the rinn or spit or penninsula that is Rosslare Strand. But I was blown away recently to discover that two half in...

Re: ISKA website not secure

John
Oileain.org was reported to me just yesterday to be the same "not secure".
I was told you pay extra for greater cover.
About 50.00 p.a. was guesstimated but not investigated as I amn't bothered about it.
