Subsidised ISKA training weekends in April

Post by fionatrahe » Tue Jan 16, 2018 10:43 pm

ISKA wants to encourage upskilling of all members, so we’re organising some generously subsidised training courses in April 2018.

We’ve organised 3 courses with some excellent providers:

· Eileen Murphy and Sean Pierce of Shearwater Kayaking will run a weekend in Achill on April 28th/29th, targeted at experienced paddlers brushing up on skills needed in challenging west coast conditions. You should be paddling at least at the equivalent of an experienced L3/3* or above.

· Ronan O’Connor from Ardmore will run a weekend on the south coast, also on April 28th /29th. This will be targeted at people paddling at L3 and above.

· This one's still not finalised, but we're working with Oisin Hallissey of Tollymore to run a weekend, probably in Strangford area (date TBD) targeted at people at or close to 3*BCU/L3 ICU and wanting to brush up on their skills. Participants will have an opportunity to be assessed for BCU 3* during the weekend. (There may be a small extra cost)

All courses will aim to push you out of your comfort zone, expect to be challenged and get wet!

· Prices will be about €60 for all courses
· Places are limited to 12 on each course.
· Open to all who were ISKA members in 2017 and have paid up for 2018
· Limited number of places available, so book early to avoid disappointment.
· Each member can get a discount for 1 course only
· Attendees will be benefiting from a discount of about €60 from ISKA. If you apply later for the subsidy ISKA offers for L3 or L4 certification, that subsidy will be reduced by €60 to ensure the funds have as broad a reach as possible.
· Price only includes training costs. You’re responsible for your own equipment, suitable for the time of year, and all travel, food and accommodation costs.
· Refunds will only be available until 15th March, after this only if someone else of an appropriate level is available to fill the place on the course.
· Courses are expected to go ahead regardless of the weather

Now, I bet you want to know where to sign up?

We’ll send out an email with final details, booking information and membership renewal form within the next few weeks. Just giving you a heads up so you can check your diaries and be looking out for the email so everyone gets a fair chance.

Course details below – here’s how to book.

Reply on this thread viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3669 by 6pm on Tuesday 6th February. DON’T reply to this message with names – just on that registration thread. If you’ve any questions about the training post it here.

• Post your full name and which course you want to attend: Shearwater, Ardmore or Tollymore,
• Pick only one course per person.
• If you don’t have an ISKA account, sign up for one here http://www.iska.ie/forum/ or ask someone to post on your behalf.
• You must be a paid-up ISKA member in 2017 and must renew for 2018 to be eligible.
• Course payment and membership renewal is not necessary yet, but will be required by 6pm on Tuesday 20th February.

If any course is oversubscribed we will draw 12 names out of a hat from the valid names posted on the forum. This is NOT first-come-first-served. All names posted by the deadline and meeting the criteria will be in the draw. We will do what we can to accommodate any who don’t make the cut, and it may be possible to add places on one or more of the courses, but we can’t plan this until we see the demand, so there are no guarantees.

If a course is undersubscribed it may have to be cancelled.

The names of those on each course will be posted on the forum – you then have until Tuesday 20th February to renew your membership and pay for the course using paypal or bank transfer, else you forfeit the place and it goes to the next person on the waiting list.

John has reworked the membership renewal form and will be sending out links to it in the next few days. Also if anyone has issues creating an account on iska.ie or remembering your login details use the Contact Us button at the bottom of the login page and John will sort you out.

• Ronan O’Connor from Ardmore will run a weekend on South coast, also on April 28th /29th. This will be targeted at people paddling at L3 & L4 standards.
• Oisin Hallissey of Tollymore will run a weekend in Strangford on 14th/15th April targeted at people aiming to get to 3*BCU/L3 ICU or already at that level and wanting to brush up their skills. Participants will have an opportunity to be assessed for BCU 3* during the weekend. Assessment will cost an extra £12 for CANI members, £25 for non-members.
