STREAMSTOWN MEET RESCHEDULED

Post by patriciacarraher » Thu Apr 28, 2016 11:06 pm

Hi all,

Sorry the weather gods have let us down again - come back Martin - all is forgiven!!!. We have decided to combine the Streamstown meet with the Camp Skills Mini meet to be held on May 20th to 22nd. As per our usual Streamstown meet there will be a meal provided on Saturday evening thanks to Pete, Dave and those fantastic westies. The meal will be provided free to participants but we usually ask for a donation for the RNLI.

I will post more information re this meet over the next few weeks but the intention of this meet is to introduce camp skills to those who are newish to paddling and would like some tips on tents, packing your life and kitchen sink into a boat, cooking on an expedition, etc. This would have taken place offshore but will now take place at Streamstown. For those new to ISKA this is probably the most sociable meet of the year and a fantastic opportunity to meet the nicest group of people you can meet - fellow paddlers, in one of the nicest campsites you will find anywhere.

All queries to myself, all complaints to anyoneelse@gmail.com

As this meet is centred around Camping Skills, I think it only right to have camper vans and such like banned!
Tents only! :o

It defeats the purpose otherwise.

Then again if we allow vans etc. after all the tents have blown away, we can all climb in with Trish & Conor.....

Dave, you will be very welcome any time in our van - unlike your fellow westie!!!!

A rough idea of what will be involved for the weekend apart from paddling:

Packing a kayak for an expedition
Food for expeditions and camping, hopefully tasting rehydrated home dehydrated food, we hope to have a little book of recipes!!!
Different types of stoves and the advantages and disadvantages of each
How to light a fire without matches
Looking at the merits and demerits of different types of tents

For all the oldies travelling please bring your tents - even if you are staying in a van - for demonstration purposes only!! Also, a selection of stoves would be good. I can supply a trangia with gas and meths, petrol stove, and a multifuel. Can someone bring a kelly kettle!!!

If you would like something in particular covered please post here.

Also, if you intend travelling maybe post here so we get an idea of the numbers to cater for in terms of the skills demos and also the dinner Saturday!!!

Okay, fingers crossed, it is quite possible the weather gods will look after us next weekend, keep an eye on the board though.

The plan is to meet up early Saturday in Streamstown (that's early by MY standards, precise time anon), Conor H will go through a session on packing a boat for an expedition and show off carry straps, etc.

On Saturday morning we will have a display of tents, tarps and the pros and cons of each and likewise various cooking stoves. Then we will have some cooking recipes, camping tips, etc. And hopefully we will have a meal to rehydrate and try out - I have not poisoned anyone yet!!!! There should be other bits and pieces too.

We hope to have two paddles, a big one starting out Saturday morning and another after lunch for those involved in the morning activities.

On Saturday evening dinner will be provided by the usual team. In lieu of payment there will be a box for donations to the RNLI. Afterwards there is a slight chance of some carousing and general enjoyment and socialising.

If you think you will make it post here so I can have an idea how many to expect. Bring along your amazing camping/kayaking equipment to show off!!!!

Hi,

I am compiling a little booklet of handy camping recipes for those who turn up at Streamstown. I know lots of people have come up with all sorts of recipes in the past from breakfast energy bars to chocolate cake cooked by tealight. If anyone has anything I can add to it I would be very grateful, please email it to me at hilliardcp at gmail dot com.

Thanks a mil,

Trish
