ISKA meet - July 21st & 22nd - Kerry

Post by alanhorner » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:51 pm

ISKA – Kerry Meet 21st – 22nd July.

This meet will be hosted at
Mannix Point Camping and Caravan Park, Caherciveen, Co.Kerry.
Near Valentia Island.
Paddling options abound with plenty of options for sheltered waters and for bigger adventures.

We can launch directly from the campsite
If so desired and there is ample paddling trips at ICU Level 3 ability.
Experienced Paddlers are encouraged to make a peer paddle with Puffin island or indeed a long day trip to Skellig’s a possibility in good weather.
I have contacted the campsite and they will give us a special rate euro10 per person/small tent. See below

Hello Alan,
Thank you for your enquiry. I love having Sea Kayaking groups here. I can certainly accommodate you. It would be useful to know approximately how many camper vans and how many small tents. I have a waterside area where you could all be together and the kayaks can be launched directly from the tents. However, the large house tent would have to be placed 25 to 30 metres away. The normal price for two people + unit (car and tent or campervan) is twenty three Euro per night and for one person + unit it is fourteen fifty per night. I will give you a special offer of ten Euro per person of 1 + unit and twenty Euro for 2 + unit. There would be no charge for the house tent.
Please let me know as soon as possible whether or not you want to make a reservation.
Cheers,
Mortimer.

So at this stage I need you to make a decision to come along and let me know what your camping plans will be ie. Tent / Camper Van / Large tent etc So I can make some arrangements with the campsite.

IMPORTANT
You will need to book camping directly with the campsite (Just mention Irish sea Kayaking Association) to get the special rate. Paddlers can of course bring their (non-paddling) family members camping if they want.
If there are some local paddlers coming along – would you perhaps volunteer to arrange a few BBQ barrels – maybe we could have a social BBQ evening (weather permitting). I’ll be able to bring a monster house tent for rainy weather etc.
So please E-mail me if you intend to come along
( al_ba_horner(at)yahoo.com ) = Use header ISKA Kerry meet 2012 if possible
Thanks and happy paddling – Alan

DON\'T FORGET
to let me know if you intend to come along.
I need to let the campsite know ahead - so that we can have camping
in one area for all the paddlers and so that we can avail of the discounted rate.

BUT you still have to do the actually booking with the campsite yourself.

I know nobody likes the \"C\" word (Commitment) but Hope you understand.
Alan

PS. Anybody able to bring some BBQ\'s ??

Canny go Alan, but be sure to try and see these. Should be of interest to older paddlers in the group.Didn\'t know these were here until recently.

Hold on a second Sennen, I recognise that gait, they are Dave Walsh\'s footprints i\'m sure. Sorry Alan I will sadly miss your trip to Kerry though I did mistakenly book Mortimer - bit of a dinosaur myself really. Will be in Stockholm with the rest of the seakayaking group who all are sad to miss your trip.

Hi folks, hope you are enjoying our \"temperate\" summer climate..
Beginning the daily weather watch now ahead of the ISKA meet. Plan to update you with some indications by Wednesday 18th July.

Format for the weekend will be to have a leader\'s briefing circa 09.00-09.30hrs each morning and a paddlers briefing 09.30hrs
You should come to the briefing ready to move off straightaway

As you know tide & time wait for no one - and there are some tidal considerations to be taken into account for each trip.
So be early ..

Please make sure your kayak & personal equipment are upto the standard we expect - ie. fully rigged with deck lines for rescue, Personal Tow rope, clothing, food & drink for a day\'s paddling etc. We expect to cover 15-20km in a day\'s paddling for L3 subj weather & sea conditions.
Make sure you have your own chart/os maps etc.

Thanks - Alan
