Course Summary:
The CANI 3 Star Assessment (Sea Kayak) measures a standard of performance for improving paddlers on sea, in conditions up to wind force 3 and associated sea state.

Achieving your 3 Star is recognition of having the skills and understanding to be a member of a group journeying in a moderate environment under leadership.

The 3 Star is often used as a bench mark of competence when joining a commercial expedition or for joining an extended club trip. The 3 Star is also a prerequisite to be attending your Level 2 Coach Training. For full details of the award syllabus, candidates should visit the CANI website for the relevant course guidelines.

Areas that will be looked at during the assessment day are:

Sea kayaking handling skills such as:

Efficient forward paddling
Turning in wind and waves
Bracing and balancing
Paddling up- across- and downwind
Safety and rescue such as:

Dealing with a capsize – ie deep water rescues, including self rescue
Towing techniques including strategies for sea sickness, exhaustion etc
Safety equipment, application of VHF, GPS
Boat repair, dealing with a damaged boat afloat and at the campsite
Trip planning – weather and tidal planning, using maps and charts including symbol recognition orientation, simple navigation, including taking a bearing and following a compass course.

If you are intending to be assessed for this award, please read carefully the CANI syllabus before booking a place. You’ll be expected to provide evidence of previous sea kayaking experience and have all personal safety equipment for the duration of the course. See the CANI guidance notes for this kit list.

Who is the course for?
This 3 Star Assessment (Sea Kayak) is aimed at those wish to demonstrate that they have the necessary skills to journey in a moderate environment – up to and including force 3 open water under leadership.
