The dreaded I question for the the Iska committee;
Registration for this event states the following for Insurance :
(**) Every participant requires to be covered by third party liability insurance with a minimum cover of € 3,000,000 and produce a copy of a current insurance certificate stating the extend of the cover, limit of liability without any excess.
If a participant is not a member of a club and/or is not covered by insurance as mentioned above, we can provide a “day membership which can be purchased at additional cost of € 10.00 per participant/person.

Will ISKA membership cover this or do we need to take the day membership potions?

Hello macnamado.
I think this race is fairly clearly not an Association event and you'll need to fund your own insurance howsoever done.
The event looks like it should be good fun and at least a couple of us will be coming down from the north to take part. Well worth the tenner. Same will apply to Cork City's Ocean Race. Its not that painful.
If you are stoney broke we could probably help you out!
Hope to see you on the May 12. John.

Donal,

ISKA membership does not cover this. It looks like a similar set up to the Ocean to City race, wherein even CI membership doesn't cover it. Hope this helps

Cheers,
Chris

If you have CI insurance you'd be covered for not just this race but every event including all your trips and ISKA meets plus any trips paddling abroad. You can of course still avail of this €20 offer from CI by joining CI now. Of course this only applies to affiliated CI clubs but as an ISKA member it will cost you 50% more as your committee in its wisdom has refused to affiliate ISKA to CI.
Cheers.

ISKA has been affiliated to Canoeing Ireland for several years, leaving it free to members to choose whether or not to sign up for insurance. If it were possible for us to remain affiliated and maintain the status quo, it would certainly be our preference.

Unfortunately CI have recently changed their rules, not ISKA. These changes require ALL members to sign up to insurance, it is no longer an option. Unless everyone is willing to take the cover, affiliation is no longer available to us.

Many of our members choose not to take insurance. Others are members of second bodies (BCU, CANI, SCA etc) with insurance and these are not interested in paying twice. There has been a lengthy debate on the forum and a vote. Under CI's current terms, ISKA can no longer affiliate.

In addition, we have contacted CI looking for clarity and if at all possible a compromise. Despite several reminders, we have never got a response, other than "word of mouth" that it would only be a minor breach of their rules. CI were asked to put this in writing as we do not wish to compromise the CI insurance should any of our members sign up IF we affiliate while in clear breach of their rules. They refused. It is the Committees responsibility to look after our members interests to the best of our ability, therefore without a clear response in writing affiliation is not an option.

Anyone feeling strongly about insurance can still register with CI themselves, albeit for an additional €30, which should not break the bank. Insurance is available to you for €50 as opposed to the €20 when ISKA could affiliate.

If we ever get a response from CI or they change their rules, we shall let you know straight away.

Any member who isn't a member of a CI affiliated club and doesn't want to spend €50 to join CI as an individual, CANI (Canoe Association of Northern Ireland) recreational membership is available for £18 (€20.56 at current exchange rates) which gives personal public liability cover up to £10,000,000. The only restriction to this is it doesn't cover competitions or specific events outside the island of Ireland.

Just making this info available to any members who wish to have insurance cover

Cheers,
Chris

ECSKC Members who join CI get the option to join CI for 20 Euro as the club is affiliated to CI and benefit from the insurance cover provided by CI which covers you for all your paddling here and abroad. Not every club member of ECSKC is a member of CI. The club is happy to pay the 100 Euro affiliation fee and the members appreciate the saving in joining CI. Nobody in ECSKC is concerned about not being covered. You join as an individual member quoting the affiliated club you are a member of and you get your CI club membership number.

Despite their own rules to the contrary, I appreciate CI’s willingness to support those who wish to take insurance without insisting everyone must join. I understanding also why they cannot put this in writing as it could leave them somewhat exposed. Where there are questions, it is usually enough reason to avoid a claim.

The value we get for ISKA membership for just €20 a year is sinful. Over the months ahead there are excellent training opportunities, a fabulous schedule and so much more. If anyone is really concerned about insurance, pay your €50,remove all doubt and let’s focus on paddling instead.
