So, I dropped my glass boat :-|

Post by Ivan-Galway » Fri Aug 14, 2015 5:42 pm

Hey

I'm not having a good month, I had a great paddle the other day, finished up and in my wisdom decide to carry my boat across rocks by myself. I slipped.

The Boat took a whack and I cracked fiberglass. The split is right on the seem that joins the upper to lower deck. I have it temporarily water proofed with flowcoat on the inside.

Any suggestions / hints for self fixing this? Fixing the gelcoat is no hassle, I'm new to fiberglass work.

Hi Ivan, if you want to fix it yourself, I would suggest the following:
- clean the surfuce from the inside (using sandpaper and mini grinder)
- use Epoxy resin to apply a piece of silk or kevlar tape from the inside (tape should be much wider that the cracks...)
- remove the old black tape that is cracked as shown on your photo (using mini grinder)
- use fabric tapein black (you can buy them in Home Focus) stick it into the crack (again, using Epoxy resin)
- Once it is dry, apply the gelcoat on the top.
If you have any further questions, or something is not clear, let me know.
